What is Telecom Technician?
The Telecom Technician plays a critical role in the installation, commissioning, integration, and supervision of telecom infrastructure, including site telecom equipment, microwave (MW) links, DC/AC power systems, civil works supervision, IBS deployment, and fiber optic cable installations. This role ensures high-quality deployments and smooth integration into the live network, supporting timely project delivery.
What does Telecom Technician do?
- Site Telecom Installations
- Install, commission, and integrate 2G/3G/4G/5G BTS, Node B, eNodeB, and other RAN equipment.
- Perform hardware expansions, software upgrades, and basic troubleshooting.
- Microwave (MW) Links
- Install and align microwave antennas, configure indoor and outdoor units, and integrate MW systems.
- Conduct MW path alignment, ATPC configuration, and throughput testing.
- DC/AC Power Systems
- Install and maintain DC rectifiers, UPS, batteries, AC distribution boards, and generators.
- Ensure proper grounding, earthing, and adherence to electrical safety standards.
- Civil Works (CW) Supervision
- Supervise tower foundation, shelter installation, grounding, earthing, cable trays, and related civil activities.
- Coordinate with civil teams to ensure compliance with project drawings, timelines, and quality standards.
- IBS Deployment
- Install and commission in-building solutions (IBS), including passive components (splitters, couplers, cables) and active equipment.
- Perform signal testing and optimize indoor coverage.
- Fiber Optic Deployments
- Supervise and execute fiber optic cable installations, splicing, and termination.
- Conduct OTDR testing, power meter tests, and fiber characterization.
- Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain as-built site documentation, installation checklists, and site readiness reports.
- Use Office 365 tools (SharePoint, PowerApps) for progress reporting and issue tracking.
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Follow all site HSE standards, including PPE use, work-at-height safety, and electrical lockout/tagout procedures.
- Ensure compliance with OEM and regulatory standards.
Requirements
What are we looking for and what does it require to be a Telecom Technician?
Education & Experience:
- Diploma in Telecommunications, Electrical, or Electronics Engineering or equivalent technical qualification.
- Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience in telecom, MW, power, civil works, IBS, or fiber deployments.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of BTS, Node B, eNodeB, MW equipment (Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, ZTE).
- Expertise in DC/AC power systems, grounding, and earthing.
- Experience with IBS design and implementation.
- Familiarity with fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing.
- Basic proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Good communication skills for coordination with field teams, NOCs, and vendors.
- Attention to detail and ability to work independently in demanding field conditions.
- Adaptability to meet tight deadlines.
