What does a Principal Data Scientist do?

The Principal Data Scientist is a senior technical leader and delivery owner within the Data Science function, responsible for driving the design, development, and deployment of advanced data science and AI solutions. This role combines deep technical expertise with strong ownership of outcomes, ensuring that complex AI initiatives are executed end-to-end and deliver measurable business impact.

As a technical authority, the Principal Data Scientist independently leads high-complexity projects, translating business problems into scalable and production-ready AI solutions. The role requires hands-on expertise across the full data science lifecycle, including problem framing, data exploration, model development, validation, deployment, and post-production monitoring.

The Principal Data Scientist sets the technical direction and quality standards for assigned workstreams, ensuring solutions are robust, efficient, and aligned with enterprise architecture and best practices. They play a critical role in bridging the gap between experimentation and production by driving adoption of MLOps, reproducibility, and scalable deployment patterns.

In addition to technical leadership, the role involves mentoring and guiding junior data scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and innovation. The Principal Data Scientist collaborates closely with cross-functional teams including product, engineering, and business stakeholders to ensure that AI solutions are practical, impactful, and aligned with business objectives.

This role is expected to stay at the forefront of advancements in AI, including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Generative AI (LLMs), and apply these technologies to solve complex, real-world problems. Ultimately, the Principal Data Scientist ensures that AI initiatives move beyond proof-of-concept into scalable, production-grade solutions with sustained business value.

·       Own the end-to-end delivery of complex AI and data science projects, from problem definition and architecture to deployment and performance monitoring

·       Lead the design and architecture of scalable AI/ML systems, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards and business objectives

·       Develop and oversee advanced machine learning models using techniques such as deep learning, ensemble methods, and time-series forecasting

·       Architect and implement production-grade AI solutions, including RAG pipelines, LLM-based systems, and agentic AI applications

·       Build and maintain scalable data and ML pipelines leveraging cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and MLOps best practices (CI/CD, MLflow, Docker)

·       Conduct rigorous technical reviews of models, data strategies, and system architectures to ensure quality and robustness

·       Define and enforce best practices for documentation, reproducibility, and model evaluation across assigned workstreams

·       Mentor and guide junior data scientists and team members through hands-on support, code reviews, and structured feedback

·       Manage and engage with stakeholders, effectively communicating technical concepts, progress, risks, and outcomes

·       Contribute to the organization’s technical excellence and knowledge sharing by developing reusable assets, frameworks, and best practices

Requirements

What are we looking for and what does it require to be a Principal Data Scientist?

•      7+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, or AI

•      Deep expertise in statistical modelling, advanced machine learning, and AI system design

•      Strong programming skills in Python (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, Pandas) and SQL

•      Proven experience independently designing, building, and delivering large-scale AI/ML systems in production environments

•      Extensive hands-on experience with LLMs and Generative AI; proven ability to architect and deploy LLM-powered applications

•      Experience building production AI systems such as RAG-based platforms (LangChain, LlamaIndex) and Agentic AI applications

•      Proficiency with cloud-based AI infrastructure, preferably AWS (SageMaker, Redshift, Lambda, S3)

•      Solid experience with MLOps practices including containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), CI/CD for ML, model monitoring, and experiment tracking (MLflow, DVC)

•      Demonstrated ability to manage end-to-end project delivery and communicate outcomes to stakeholders
